Be yourself

Know thy self , know thy enemy, a thousand battles , a thousand victories.

With the advent of social media and the myriad of inspirational quotes we are exposed to, be yourself might be the one statement we have heard the most. while the quote itself encapsulates so much meaning just at the expense of two words. Being true to oneself is still one of the most underachieved goals that most people have. so how do you find yourself and in doing so find the path to be yourself?

what does be yourself mean?

we are who we are due to 2 main factors, our genetic structure that we inherit from both our parents and the environmental influences under which we grow up such socio-economic strata, educational background , parenting styles and other such influences. our genetic structure determines what skills and abilities we have a natural inclination towards and our environmental influences act as stressors to activate dormant genes . This complex mix of nature and nurture drives our bodies and minds to be uniquely equipped for specific tasks and situations in comparison to the general population.

being yourself is an art form of finding the abilities you have a natural inclination towards and the environments were you feel you are most competent. Most individuals are like crocodiles. crocodiles are majestic creatures that can survive on both land and water, while the crocodile can move on both land and water ; it appears clumsy on land and graceful in the water. Most humans are like crocodiles they can swim gracefully with a high pace on water yet choose to walk on the land seemingly both clumsy and slow. humans fail to see that they are unique creatures and that each one of us have traits that can lead us to achieve our state of self actualization .

how can you be yourself?

just knowing that we need to be ourselves is not a thought that is enough to drive us to be the best version of ourselves. In order for you to be yourself you must first know yourself and to know yourself you need to be ready to fail , and find the courage to keep to failing again and again. Humans live in such a fast paced world that we are so attuned to getting that which we need in a short period of time. This makes us pick up an unhealthy obsession to achieving success as fast as possible rather than absorbing the process of achieving it. We only see the tip of the iceberg and forget about all that mass that lies below the water

For you to be yourself you need to first accept that you have to fail and will keep failing over the period of your pursuit of finding yourself. you need to keep trying new things, fail at them and introspect about the whole process that lead you to that point. Success can never teach you as much as failure can ,sure it is uncomfortable and most people you know will say “I told you so”. Yet you have to keep going , keep living, keep persevering and keep failing. through this process over time you start to see and understand yourself more clearly ;and within that haze of the unknown you will start to see that which matters to you and that which does not . Failure will weed out the people around you and your misconstrued understating of yourself. finally through understanding yourself you can finally see the path to becoming yourself.

hy do you need to find yourself?

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

There comes a common question when I discuss such matters in my social circle, they ask me why is it so important to be myself? cant I just follow a path that other people have carved out and achieve success similarr to how they have?

Truth is you totally can, and a lot of the times it is enough. our goals can be in similar lines to the goals of such people. Yet when we do this we are at a high risk of following a social trend and spending years on achieving a dream that never was ours to begin with.By doing so we hit that mid-life crisis period and then our life starts to feel less like ours. we feel empty and start to see our lives just crawl away. A midlife crisis happens to individuals who achieve goals that weren’t their to begin with and in doing so fail to find themselves because they were afraid to risk carving their own path and find their meaning for their life.

To the reader that happened to chance upon this blog, do not fear failure, embrace it. seize those opportunities, make mistakes, keep learning and growing and one day when you least expect it you will look at yourself in the mirror and finally start to see your true self.

Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; Mastering yourself is true power.
